Silvis School District to Hold Public Forums on Budget Reductions – March 7th

The Silvis School District invites all district citizens to a public forum on Wednesday, March 7th in the George O. Barr Cafeteria. One will be held from 8:30-9:30 A.M. and the other will be
6:00-7:00 P.M.

Superintendent Ray Bergles and members of the Silvis Board of Education will make a short
presentation on district programs, history of cutbacks the past 10 years, and present possible
reductions in the fiscal year 2013 budget. Residents will be able to offer suggestions and ask
questions.

The Silvis District 34 School Board will need to make final decisions on staffing for next year at
the March 14th Board meeting due to Illinois law.

Annual Blood Drive

We are looking for some wonderful individuals to step up and save some lives on Wednesday 2/29 from 3-6 pm at George O. Barr School Elementary Gym in Silvis. This drive serves as a fundraising opportunity for the Rocket Booster Parent Organization. Over the past 3 years our blood drives have helped to contribute $775.00 towards the purchase of classroom supplies. If you are unable to give yourself, please invite a friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker to give on your behalf. Collections are really low this time of year, so you can really make a difference in someone else’s life by donating.

·        Minimum age to donate is 16 years of age.
·        Minimum weight to donate is 110 pounds.
·        Tattoos and piercings acceptable as long as they were done at a licensed facility (not a neighbor’s basement).
·        Acceptable medications include: blood pressure, cholesterol, and anti-depressant medication.
·        Diabetics are able to donate as long as their blood sugar is well controlled.
·        You need to have been off antibiotics for 48 hours to be eligible to donate.
·        Cancer survivors are able to donate after 1 year of being cancer free with no preventative medications. If you gave blood with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center, received cancer treatments, and now have had a clean bill of health for 1 year, you should be eligible to donate again, but you would need to call 800-747-5401 X 253 to have the temporary deferral on your donor record removed at least 3 days before attempting to give blood. (individuals that have had leukemia or lymphoma are sadly unable to give)

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences are quickly approaching! The date for conferences is on February 16, 2012 from 4:15 until 7:30. School will dismiss at 2:15 on the Thursday, the 16th for conferences.

There is also NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 17th and on Monday, February 20th.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our 2nd Annual Trivia Night. We had a great time and raised around $4300.00 for our schools. A special thanks to Chrissy Winters, Donna Thurman, Vicki Wright and Toby Murphy, members of our parent group Rocket Boosters, for their time in organizing and securing donations for the silent auction and raffle. Thanks again and hope to see ya all next year!

Hand-in-Hand Pre-K Screening Information

Silvis School District #34 will hold a screening for the Hand-in-Hand Preschool program for the 2011-2012 school year. The program is for all children ages 3-5 who live in the Silvis School District #34 boundaries.

The program is a half-day session at George O. Barr with a certified teacher and aide. Children who live on the bus route will also have access to transportation to and from school.

Children must be screened for entry into the program. The screening will be during school registration:

Wednesday, August 3rd from 8 – 12 and 3 – 7pm

Thursday, August 4th from 7am-11am and 1pm – 3pm

Thursday, August 11th from 9am – 12pm.

Screenings are held at George O. Barr Elementary School at 1305 5th Avenue, Silvis.

Additional documentation may be required including a new student information form, the student residency enrollment form, a home language survey, a physical form for PK, Kindergarten, and 6th grade students, a copy of a vision exam for all new students, a copy of a dental exam for all students entering Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 6th grade; a copy of the student’s immunization record, a copy of the most recent IEP or 504 plan, and/or a special residency affidavit.
