Silvis School District to Hold Public Forums on Budget Reductions – March 7th

The Silvis School District invites all district citizens to a public forum on Wednesday, March 7th in the George O. Barr Cafeteria. One will be held from 8:30-9:30 A.M. and the other will be
6:00-7:00 P.M.

Superintendent Ray Bergles and members of the Silvis Board of Education will make a short
presentation on district programs, history of cutbacks the past 10 years, and present possible
reductions in the fiscal year 2013 budget. Residents will be able to offer suggestions and ask
questions.

The Silvis District 34 School Board will need to make final decisions on staffing for next year at
the March 14th Board meeting due to Illinois law.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences are quickly approaching!  The date for conferences is on February 16, 2012 from 4:15 until 7:30.  School will dismiss at 2:15 on the Thursday, the 16th for conferences.

There is also NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 17th and on Monday, February 20th.

Second Annual Trivia Night – UPDATE!

Thanks to everyone who came out for our 2nd Annual Trivia Night.  We had a great time and raised around $4300.00 for our schools.  A special thanks to Chrissy Winters, Donna Thurman, Vicki Wright and Toby Murphy, members of our parent group Rocket Boosters, for their time in organizing and securing donations for the silent auction and raffle.  Thanks again and hope to see ya all next year!

Hand-in-Hand Pre-K Screening Information

Silvis School District #34 will hold a screening for the Hand-in-Hand Preschool program for the 2011-2012 school year.  The program is for all children ages 3-5 who live in the Silvis School District #34 boundaries.

The program is a half-day session at George O. Barr with a certified teacher and aide.  Children who live on the bus route will also have access to transportation to and from school.

Children must be screened for entry into the program.  The screening will be during school registration:

Wednesday, August 3rd from 8 – 12 and 3 – 7pm

Thursday, August 4th from 7am-11am and 1pm – 3pm

Thursday, August 11th from 9am – 12pm.

Screenings are held at George O. Barr Elementary School at 1305 5th Avenue, Silvis.

Additional documentation may be required including a new student information form, the student residency enrollment form, a home language survey, a physical form for PK, Kindergarten, and 6th grade students, a copy of a vision exam for all new students, a copy of a dental exam for all students entering Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 6th grade; a copy of the student’s immunization record, a copy of the most recent IEP or 504 plan, and/or a special residency affidavit.

Master Teacher Award Recipient – Mrs. Jennifer Caldwell

Congratulations to Mrs. Jennifer Caldwell, the counselor and science teacher at Silvis Junior High School!  Mrs. Caldwell received the Master Teacher Award on Friday, May 6, 2001.

Years of teaching: 11.

Teaching philosophy: ”I believe that each child is a unique individual with an innate desire to learn. By addressing individual needs, learning styles, interests and social concerns, I can create an environment that the child feels safe and learning would take place on multiple levels.”

Testimonials:

”Going above and beyond does not describe the true dedication Mrs. Caldwell exhibits on a daily basis,” wrote Michael Hughes, principal at George O. Barr Elementary School, in Silvis, when nominating Mrs. Caldwell. ”She can be found organizing our Backpack Snack program, working with the Builder’s Club, organizing canned food drives, making treats for children throughout the district, coaching extracurricular events, and attending all events and activities throughout the year.”

”She made science come alive to students,” wrote Judy Glenn. ”The absence of a science lab and equipment did not hinder her in any way. Jennifer worked tirelessly to make the curriculum exciting and interesting to her students.”
