Hand in Hand Preschool Screening

Silvis School District #34 will hold screenings for its Hand In Hand Preschool program for the 2011-2012 school year. This state-funded program is for children ages 3-5 who live in the Silvis School District and are not eligible for kindergarten.

The program is a half-day session at George O. Barr with a certified teacher and aide. Children who live on the bus route will also have transportation to and from school.

Children must be screened to be considered for the program.

If you have a child or know of someone who has a child in the Silvis School District between the ages of 3 and 5, please call Mrs. Jecks for an appointment at 792-0639 ext. 306. If necessary, leave a phone number and your call will be returned.

Screenings will be held at George O. Barr Elementary School in the fall.  It is important that you call as soon as possible to set an appointment.

Announcement Concerning Pink Eye

We have had several cases of pink eye throughout the entire school since returning from Christmas break.  Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation of the eyes caused by a virus or bacteria. The symptoms may include redness and itching of the eyes, a gritty feeling in the eye, discharge of yellow or white matter from the eye, blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Pink eye is transmitted by direct contact with a person already infected, through things such as clothing, toys, desktops, hands, and by sharing eye make-up etc.  Pink eye is very common among children and is extremely infectious.  After diagnosis by a physician, exclusion from school for a minimum of 24 hours and possibly longer is mandatory.  It is always important to practice good hand washing to eliminate or reduce the chance of spreading any type if infections, illnesses, and viruses.

Tips for at home to help prevent spreading to other family members:

  • change bedding (pillowcases) daily until non-contagious period is over
  • wash infected clothing (coats, scarves, mittens, washcloths, towels, everyday clothes, etc) separately from other family members
  • throw away contacts replace with new ones after infection is gone
  • do not share make-up, discard mascara
  • sanitize play area, wash toys, remotes, games, phones, etc
  • wash hands often

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs. Jack at 792-9663.

Student Council Food Drive

Thank you to all the teachers, staff and students who contributed to the elementary student council food drive. We collected over 2,800 items of food. This is well above the goal of 2,000.

We are so impressed with how hard everyone worked to beat our goal and make this better than last year. Last year we collected less than 2,000 items of food and 2100 in 2008!  Many families of the Silvis School District will benefit from the generosity of all of all our staff, students, and parents.

Congratulations to Mrs. Staples class (Pre-K – 2nd grade group) who won the pizza party by bringing in the most food with 204 items.  Congratulations too to Mrs. Erickson’s class who were a very close 2nd with 199 items.

Congratulations to  Miss Bultynck’s class for winning the 3 – 5th grade pizza party with 374 items of food. Miss Bultynck had tough competition from Mrs. Fry with 349 items and Miss Haut with 341.

Thank you again for all the hard work and and effort to reach out to the families of Silvis School District!
